Glenn Vilppu talks (17 minutes in) about an advice he got from his teacher. Its about who you are as an artist. For that you should identify the one artists you like the most in a category.
For example you like Rembrandt the most for his light. You like Fechin the most for his palette knife technique. And so on.
If you have found an artist for all categories, then you have found a cross section of who you could be as an artist. And chances are high that you are the only one with your combination of artists.
You can start with these categories: Space, Color, Shape, Form, Value, Texture, Line. And you can go much more into the details.
